Fashion Shoot - Queensland, Australia

I wanted to share my fashion shoot from Maleny Botanic Gardens and tell you a little bit about how I achieved these images.  Credits to Tamika Husdon from Tamika Makeup and Beauty for hair and make up and to Sara Hatten-Masterson from The Image Boutique for her creative styling efforts and of coarse I couldn't have done it without Erin-May Blackburn, my beautiful model for the day.
Several of these images have been successful in publication on various fine art websites and online magazines so congratulations to my team.
I also want to thank Salita Matthews and George Wu for the fantastic gowns and jewellery they provided for this shoot.
My vision was to shoot this entire series outdoors to utilise the beautiful scenery available to us in Queensland.  "High fashion meets the great outdoors".  I used a Canon 6D wtih a 85mm f/1.2 lens.  To assist the natural light I used a speedlite with the ever portable Apollo Orb, where appropriate.

Image made with Canon 6D, 85mm Lens, using apollo orb high camera left, polariser attached to lens, camera settings: 1/160, f/2.0 ISO 100, post processing Photoshop CS6 + textures from Florabella

Image made with Canon 6D, 85mm Lens, using natural light behind sun me (model facing), polariser attached to lens, camera settings: 1/400, f/2.0 ISO 100, post processing Photoshop CS6, I wanted to utilise the wind therefore it really dicated where the model faced and the position of the light that is why I left this look until last after the sun set so there wasn't harsh shadows across the model

'Little Flower Princess'

There's nothing that little girls love doing more than dressing up as princesses.  So, one afternoon, camera in hand, I said to the girls - "Lets play dress ups and play outside in the flowers".  Imagine their excitement!

It was fun getting ready and only took about 20 mins to get dressed and do hair for the two girls.  At this stage our back yard was completely covered in magnificent yellow dandelions, a setting worthy of a princess.

The following photos were taken in what most photographers refer to as the 'golden hour', as the afternoon light provides a wonderful golden glow.  I was shooting with a canon 6D and a 50mm f/1.4 lens.  Often I will also use a polariser if I can get enough shutter speed out of it for fast moving children.

It was a wonderful game to all run around in a big circle then fall down and look at Mummy.

Image taken with 50mm lens at f1.4, 1/250 shutter speed, ISO 100, with a polariser.  Sun was directly behind the subject.  Edited in Photoshop CS6.  This image was also published on fine art website www.artfreelife.com

The key with children is to do it fast and keep it fun.  Please let me emphasise that even though my girls have a photographer for a mother they really dislike having their picture taken and often look away from the camera so these images are the result of me keeping it extra fun and snapping that moment when I can.

No joke....despite my best efforts, 5 mins into our games my girls started to become bored and wander off to do their own thing....I knew my time was limited.  I knew I had a couple of the eldest but had to put in one effort to capture my youngest.

Success at last....and a little sisterly love as a bonus.  With a little planning I now have these beautiful images of my girls that will go on the wall for sure.  My speciality is getting the beautiful image that shows your child's personality, they do not need to be a natural in front of the camera to capture a memory to keep forever.

Welcome....

Ok...so I'm very new to the art of 'blogging', to me it is a foreign concept that people would actually want to read about your life, your journey and your experiences, but here goes.  For the most part I am a wife to a wonderful, supportive husband, and a mother to two beautiful, and when I say beautiful what I really mean is wild girls!

I like to tell my story and that of others through pictures, what started out as a hobby, fast became an overpowering obsession, which hasn't shown any signs of releasing me.  I always loved the art of photography but hesitated with the thought that I couldn't possibly make the beautiful images like the ones that captured, inspired and drew me towards the art in the first place.....

One day a few written words popped up in my news feed "whatever is good for the soul....do that" samantha wills.  So I knew that photography, very simply, made me happy, so with that new thought in mind, no longer worrying about what other people would think of my work, I started my journey.

In this space I want to share my images and what drives me to create them and how I went about it.

Please enjoy!
